A performing artiste of rare sensitivity and versatility is Vasumathi Badrinathan. As a vocalist of Indian classical Carnatic music, Vasumathi combines a fine blend of tradition and creativity in her singing style. Coming from a family with an intense musical background, Vasumathi was initiated into this art at a very young age by her mother late Smt. Padma Seshadri, who was an accomplished singer. Subsequent to the initial grooming from her mother, Vasumathi learnt Carnatic music from Smt. T. R. Balamani, in Bombay. Vasumathi’s style is one derived from fine tradition, which was passed on by her mother and she enjoys a rich traditional repertoire by virtue of her training.

Vasumathi has now been singing for more than two decades. She’s a regular performer in the Madras Music season and has toured extensively in Europe and Asia Pacific countries and has given several performances and lecture-demonstrations. Vasumathi has also produced and presented several culture-based features, talk-shows, panel discussions for the radio and television. Vasumathi is a recipient of the Junior Fellowship for outstanding artistes given by the Department of Culture, Govt of India. Vasumathi was awarded the title “Sur-Mani” for her proficiency in music by Sur Singar Samsad, Mumbai. And the title “Padma Bharathi” was conferred on her by the Padma Sarangapani Cultural Academy, Chennai. Jaya TV – a very popular Tamil TV Channel featured Vasumathi in their morning show “Kalai Malar”. Besides she has also been featured on CNBC, Vijay TV, TNT Television, Paris etc.

Besides being a graded artiste of All India Radio and an empanelled artiste of the ICCR, Vasumathi has been involved in research work on varied subjects like Divya Prabandham poetry of the 5-9th centuries, Music of the Mystics, Saga of the Raga, Padams and Javalis, Spirituality in Indian music, Concert music vs music in dance, to name a few. Being a natural speaker, Vasumathi presents her research work in the form of lecture-demonstrations in various national and international forums, seminars and conferences.
Recently, Vasumathi has collaborated with a Hindustani musician Smt. Vrinda Mundkur of the Kirana & Agra Gharanas and presented an innovative and Creative concert which blends both the systems. Vasumathi has four music albums to her credit, namely, Swara Dhwani, Tamilmarai Isai (Alwar Pasurams), Nayika (Telugu padams) and Tamil Padams.

Besides music, Vasumathi is also a performing dancer of Bharata Natyam, trained under the stalwart Kalaimamani Guru Late Sri. T. K. Mahalingam Pillai of Sri. Rajarajeswari Bharata Natya Kala Mandir, Bombay. As a creative writer, Vasumathi has been publishing several in-depth articles in the areas of music and dance, in several national and international publications.
