PARWEEN SULTANA

Born in 1960 in Nowgong, Assam, Prween Sultana belonged to a musically inclined family. Her grandfather was a very talented "rabab" player of Afghanistan. Her father Ikramul Majid had recieved training from the great Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan.

She started learning music at the age of five under her father but later she was sent to training under Acharaya Chinmoy Lahira of Kolkata.

At the age of twelve she made her dbut at Sadarang Sammelan in Kolkata.
She is the youngest recipient of Padmashri(1976).

Today the artist believes that one should not confine oneself to nay style or gharana. So, though she has recieved training in the Kirana and Patiala gharana she now continues to learn from her husband and guru Dilshad Khan.

It must be noted that Parween Sultana was the first Indian female singer to be covered by the New York times.

Her skills as a vocal artist is acclaimed all over the world.
