ZAKIR HUSSAIN

Zakir Hussain , the son of the legendary Tabla player Ustad Allah Rakha Khan was born on the 9th of March 1952 in Mumbai. He started his training under his father at the age of seven under the Punjab Gharana.

When he was just eight years old he made his debut when he accompanied the great Sarod maestro, Ustad Ali Akbar Khan at a private gathering.Zakir Hussain has come a long way since then. He has given sterling performances with the likes of Pandit Hari Prasad Chaurasia and Pandit Ravi Shankar.

He has been bestowed with many awards such as Padmashri in 1988, Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1991(of which he is the youngest recipient till date) and the Indo American Award in 1990. He also acquired a doctorate degree in music from the university of Washington, Seattle.

Zakir Hussain"s contributions to the world of music also includes composing music for both international and Indian films. Some international movies for which he composed music are Mwerchant - Ivory"s "Heat and Dust", Bernard Bertolucci"s "Little Buddha" and among the Indian movies is Sai Paranjpe"s "Saaz".

Zakir Hussain gives all the credit for his great success, his ability to play in an exceptional way and the understanding of the tabla to his father , his guru the late Ustad Allh Rakha Khan.
