Kishori Amonkar was born on the 10th of April, 1931, to the famous vocalist of the Jaipur - Atrauli Gharana Mogubai Kurdikar. Thus she started her musical training under her mother itself.
One can clearly see the presence of "bol taan" and "phirat taans", in her style. "Bol taan is the rhythmic play of tonal values on word contentand "phirat taans" is a succession of taans used while presenting a raga. These are the vital features of her gharana.
She has been homoured with various prestigious awards such as the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award (1985), the Padmabhushan in 1987 and the Sangeet Samradhini Award in 1997.
Kishori Amonkar is often referred to as "Gana Saraswati" due to her captivating voice. She can be told to be the reigning queen of the Jaipur - Atrauli Gharana imbibing its distinct traditions so beautifully.
